Frequently Asked Questions

Consulting is an act of offering professional guidance, knowledge, education and actionable steps to the challenges clients bring forward. Whether you are an independent professional or an organization, consulting in mental health can help you with (a non-exhaustive list):

- Mental health awareness, promotion, and prevention and how it applies to your professional context or field

- Workplace well-being, mental health, burn-out and vicarious trauma prevention and management

- Integrating a trauma-informed lens to your work

- Creating inclusive and accessible services, policies, content or language within your industry or organization.

YES! While mental health consulting can inform you with knowledge and tools, it is different from therapy. The goal of mental health consulting is to support change through awareness, training, education, and other pedagogical tools and expertise. Consulting has a business or professional focus compared to therapy, which is best suited for personal experience processing and healing. Difficult topics may still arise in mental health consulting. They will be addressed and discussed respectfully, sensitively and with compassion. However, boundaries are not defined by the confidential and privileged client-therapist relationship in consulting, as it would be in therapy.

Nuances offers its services to individual professionals and organizations.

Professionals working in helping professions, as well as students training to enter in a helping profession, can reach out on an individual basis to consult or as a group/organization.

Health and education services are the some of the most well-known helping professions. At Nuances, we consider all professions that work in service of others, and even more so, with potentially vulnerable populations. With this expansion of the definition, we can add first responders, certain law professions, human resources personnel, and personnel working in death care to name a few.

You may also be working in a field not identified above but feel you might benefit from being a more supportive manager, employer, or team member.

Trauma-informed practices are rooted in an understanding of the prevalence and impact of trauma. Trauma is subjective in nature, as each individual and community will experience events differently based on their unique identities and backgrounds.

We use a trauma-informed lens as its framework promotes important principles such as safety, strength, cultural awareness, sensitivity and empowerment. We believe that these principles are good practice to adopt when working with people.

Trauma-informed mental health consulting can help you in many ways. Here is a non-exhaustive list:

- Increase your awareness on mental health in diverse environments and publics (such as in the workplace and with co-workers or vulnerable clienteles)

- Develop your skills in basic counseling or supportive conversations as a non-mental health professional working with vulnerable clients

- Expand your abilities and knowledge in sensitive and impactful language and communication

- Learn about the people you work with and how a trauma-informed lens can help you serve them better.

- Understand the role of culture, society, systems and identity in how your clientele interacts with you.

- Consider how power and privilege can perpetuate and reinforce trauma and your role in this matrix as a service provider or institution.

We offer a range of services from individual professional consulting and mentorship to larger consultancy projects which can include organizational training programs, report writing, and internal culture and policy transformations.
